The article chosen for this discussion is a systematic review of research done on the mental health of adolescents during the Covid-19 pandemic. The target audience is scientific people involved in the health of the adolescent population, and focuses on 61 research studies focused on the mental health of 54,999 total child and adolescent participants (Urvashi et al., 2021). The studies reviewed throughout this article used questionnaires and interviews in order to gather data. The author found “a significant, substantial increase in depression and anxiety symptoms was seen in children during the lockdown compared to rates observed before the lockdown” (Panchal et al., para. 23, 2021).
Implications for population-based nursing include education on the risk factors for mental health disorders, where to get help, and how to manage the diagnoses. Panchal et al. state that increased social media use was associated with a higher risk of developing anxiety and/or depressive symptoms (2021), so the education should focus on awareness of social media use. To address this concern, the public health nurse could organize a campaign to help adolescents be more aware of their social media usage and the associated health conditions. Odgers and Jensen have reported that “…digital technologies may be influencing multiple aspects of adolescents’ lives, ranging from their levels of physical activity and their ability to interact with others in ‘real life’ to a more recent focus on …mental health problems” (para. 3, 2020).
The intervention suggested is to provide adolescents with a time log where they input their time using social media. Beside the time log, there will be a list of symptoms (anxiety, depression, self-esteem changes, physical inactivity, etc.), that the participant can check off during each use. At the end of the allotted time, the participants can then go through their total social media time usage and reflect on the feelings they experienced due to it. The nurse could then go through the log with them and offer resources for support as necessary.
Read other students’ article summaries, postings that focused on the health needs of the two populations that were different from the one you chose to discuss. (Step 1 lists the three populations.) What else do you want to know about the health need? Comment and/or expand upon the implications for population-based nursing posed for the other two populations. Give suggestions for enhancing the proposed interventions.
