Observing Early Childhood Development And Learning
This assignment represents the first of three observations and papers you will write during the semester. The first assessment requires that you observe the physical, cognitive, and socioemotional areas of development of a child between 3 to 5 years of age in order to describe his/her child’s characteristics and needs (NAEYC 1a.)
The goal of your assessment is to determine competencies in connecting theory to children’s unique growth patterns, understanding of how early development is affected by multiple influences (NAEYC 1b), identification of the interrelationship among domains, and your ability to understand unique patterns of development and supportive practices that can be used to create healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments.

The goal of your assessment is to demonstrate competencies related to connecting theory to children’s unique growth patterns, understanding of how external and individual characteristics influence growth and development, and identifying the interrelationship between domains.
This Assignment task requires that you conduct an observation via video to comply with Covid-19 restrictions as expressed by the Governor of the state of Illinois.
>>The actual assignment starts here<< Part 1: Pre-Reflection/Description of Setting Recommendation: read the areas to focus on as shown below before watching the video. Doing so will direct your viewing. Then, view the video at least twice. This assignment is a formal paper worth 100 points and should be four to six, double-spaced pages in length. To provide you context prior to your virtual observation, take notes, reflect on the following prompts, and check off each item as you respond to each of the prompts in complete sentences. If there is no evidence, please state “There is no evidence.”: ___Facility name and the classroom you are observing ___Is the facility profit, non-profit, or school-based? ___What are you able to discern about the community in which the center is located (e.g., demographics, population, socioeconomics, etc.)? ___ Number of children present e. ___ Number of staff present f.___ Activities occurring during this virtual observation time period g.___ Other relevant information (e.g., whether families/visitors were in the room, how children responded to strangers, etc.) Part 2: Completing a Narrative Behavioral Observation Observe a video of preschool children. Then: h. ___Use a narrative behavioral observation strategy, such as an anecdotal record, to take accurate, concise, and objective notes about that child’s appearance, interactions, and behaviors. i. ___While completing your narrative behavioral observation, be sure to capture descriptions of the child’s physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional areas of development and compare those to the information provided in your textbook and in the Milestones video. Please copy and paste the following videos one at a time into a new window for better results: Video resource: Milestones https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/actearly/milestones/index.html Video Resource, 3 to 5 years old Length: 31.15min; watch at least twice Part 3: Anecdotal Record As you are watching the video for the first and second time: Take accurate, concise, and objective notes about that child/ren’s appearance, interactions, and behaviors in all three domains. While completing your anecdotal notes, be sure to capture descriptions of the child’s physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional domains of development. Your observational notes should be detailed and objective (without judgment). No opinions. Categorize your data by using the chart on the last page of this document. Feel free to duplicate or expand the chart to suit your needs in order to post the data. Part 4: Post Reflection For this portion of your assignment, you will be analyzing the data you charted. Objectivity is no longer required at this point in your assignment, as you are now making subjective commentary. Your summary should include each of the following: An overview of what you observed in each developmental domain (physical, cognitive, socioemotional). In your commentary, be sure to integrate a theorist’s perspective (Ex.:Erikson, Piaget, or Vygotsky) into your discussion of all three domains of development. Include at least three to five specific examples of how your observational data complemented or deviated from developmental milestones. (NAEYC 1a). A description of three to five contextual factors (such as ethnicity, language ability, socio-economics, religion, and society) and how those factors may hypothetically influence healthy development and learning. Based on the child/ren you assessed, specifically, what impact might cultural, familial, biological, and environmental influences have on his or her physical and mental health, well-being, and nutrition? Address how stress, trauma, protective factors, and resilience, impact children’s wellbeing and learning in general. (NAEYC 1b). Based on what you have learned from this observation and your knowledge of child development, explain how you would create a healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environment for her/him (NAEYC 1c). In other words, describe your (future) classroom where you have incorporated what you have learned about child development.
