Part 3: Visual Analysis of a Public Monument

What roles do monuments play in public space in New York City? In America? Are there any roles you believe monuments should play? Why? Please make direct reference either to the “Public Monuments Commission” or the “National Monument Audit” in your answer. [250-500 words].

Part 4: How could art contribute to New York City’s public spaces?

For the fourth and final part of our research project, please answer our research question: How could art contribute to NYC’s public spaces? The basic requirements (explained further on the next slide) are to write between 250 and 500 words and illustrate your answer with 3-5 images.

To begin: Please reread your answers and look at the images you submitted for Parts 1, 2 and 3. You may also reflect on some images we have looked at as a class. What are some examples of public art? What are some roles that public art has played? How does public art impact us as individuals, as a community and as a city? What are some changes you would like to see to our public space? What do you like/ dislike about the way that public space is used? This is your chance to bring together your answer from Part 1 (the article research), Part 2 (your keyword definitions), and Part 3 (the public monuments) into a single argument.
