Directions: During discussions you will read all student responses and choose another student’s comments to respond to. You will also respond to one of my prompts. Two responses (1 in response to prompts and 1 in response to another student) are required for full credit. You may of course respond more than two times. Your responses must be polite and contain no “junk science” as evidence or to support your thoughts. Questions will be posted weekly related to relevant topics. I will provide specific individualized feedback on discussions you submit and score according to the rubrics provided. See the rubric below followed by my prompts.
JUST A REMINDER TO USE THE SCIENCE. WHEN YOU SITE A SOURCE MAKE SURE IT SUPPORTS WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. READ IT BEFORE YOU USE IT. USE CREDIBLE SOURCES, NOT SOURCES THAT ARE GENERIC OR SELLING (.COM) OR GROUPS THAT MAY BE PRO OR ANTI (.ORG).
Discussion Rubric
NO COPY AND PASTE DIRECT FROM YOUR SOURCES, UNLESS YOU ARE CITING A SMALL AMOUNT OF DATA.
1. You must provide two responses. One to another student and one to my prompt. This is a discussion for you and others to learn from. You can ask a question or make a comment to the posting student to enhance your learning and understanding.
2. You must write a paragraph (at least 5 sentences). A sentence or two is not enough.
3. You must post by the due date. No late responses accepted.
4. You must use scientifically correct information. You may not claim conspiracy theories, or “old wives tales” as truth. You may share personal “funny” or interesting stories related to the topics.
5. Your responses must be based on factual evidence using critical thinking skills. Examples of non factual information: the earth is flat and you catch a cold from not wearing a coat and climate change is not happening and vaccines cause more harm that the disease.
6. You may include additional information with websites etc. and thinking critically may earn you extra credit.

Recently my husband went to the grocery store and purchased what he thought was a healthy food product; this product contained saturated fats. Was this a healthy option and why?
( In a past biology class a student accused me of being too liberal by including discussions on a vegan and vegetarian diet which he claimed did not belong in a biology class. I do eat a mostly vegan diet because I am allergic to eggs and dairy and really do not like the taste of most meats, well maybe a big “ole” juicy greasy bar burger. And what we eat is related to the biology of life. So what do you think? )
I am not pushing an agenda nor am I advertising this website. A vegan friend of mine shared it and I thought I would share it with you all. I usually make my own recipes from scratch and unprocessed foods but this might be a good starter site. I will even offer this, I sometimes add meat to vegan dishes. GASP! Again I cannot speak to the recipes here as I have not tried any yet. If there is any item for sale here, I am not encouraging the purchase. But how amazing, making vegan cheese?

Did you get a flu shot this year? Covid 19 vaccination? I am not asking for your medical information, you can share what you know if you want. Justify why you DID and how that will affect the others around you. And to offer a follow up question. Should a health care provider (nurse, NP, PA) who refuses a vaccination be charged with a crime if a vulnerable patient catches the disease from them and dies? Should a medical facility be fined if it allows employees to go unvaccinated and infect vulnerable patients? Base your response on factual scientific evidence here. Can hospitals require vaccinations? (yes this has been ruled on by the Supreme Court)
